Ecotone, a transitional area between different communities. It has some of the characteristics of each bordering biological community and often contains values not found in the overlapping communities. Transitional area is more valuable then each of them separately.

Fetsund is a special place where nature, knowledge, culture and industry meets together. Our proposal is a transition area between those main indicates, both connected in architectural result.
Design of the „Nasjonalt fløtingsmuseum og kompetansesenter for våtmark” becomes ecotone between architecture and nature. Is a knowledge exchange platform between scientific and academic communities. Over century- old tradition of the industry and local production now can be presented and experienced by the visitors in a unique place which is National Logging Museum. New place is a continuation of the cultural core built within MiA institution, being linked to other museums.
Our architectural answer is deeply rooted in natural surrounding and coexisting with it. Designed structure consists of three elements of long-shaped elements, situated parallel to the coastline, gently bended, leaving an impression of being pushed by the water flow.
Idea of National Logging Museum is strongly connected to forms and shapes that are relics of log-driving industry, seen on the River Glomma up to this day. The way original platforms were put and connected together on the water, creating pattern, become part of the unique roof scape, designed for visitors to admire it from roof terrace.
Arriving in the main hall, visitors are welcomed by three roads of activities to choose.
The right side consists of research department and administration with separate controlled entrance.
In the left one, guests will not only find wetland’s exhibitions and workshops, but also free access boutique, cafe and restaurant with rooftop terrace.
Flexible exhibition areas give possiblities of arranging both large or small scale displays. It’s suitable for light-sensitive exhibits with possibilities to use roof shutters, protecting from sun.
Outside workshop building is a place of outdoor education. Exists as a separate building in pontoon construction with easy access from the ground and wetlands. Having a pontoon platforms as a fundament it is then adjustable for any flooding conditions. The space above it is designated for multipurpose roof terrace, being also a terminal for people waiting for kayak tour or water transport to their way back home.
In-between spaces together with aquarium square are placed in the center, reachable from each side, freely linking Floating Museum and Wetland Center.
Architectural form is separated into tree main elements by the water canals called „Glomma in-between”. It is providing flexible access to each part of the building and easy visibility of exhibition areas.
„Glomma in-between” gives access by ramps directly to the gardens below. Visitors can go back to the boutique and restaurant between multipurpose niches, filled with wetland’s typical flora and fauna. People can feel the synergy of indoor and outdoor milieus each season differently.
The building is being lifted from the ground, making unique value under, attractive and purposeful. The gardens are planned, when flooded, to redirect water to specially designed zones and canals. We used this level to place parking lot and controlled access for workers, providing area efficiency.
There are few way of access from land, with two main amfi-stairs, first one from main entrance and another from workshop’s demonstration square.
From the water side, people can reach the building by private boat, arriving to the molo near restaurant.
Our proposal contains separate water canals for public transport and canoe/kayak linked to outside workshop building with multipurpose terrace.
Building is designed to have wooden construction, with facades in wooden cladding, produced by local manufacturers. Glazed facades are covered in front with bird-friendly “zen wind curtains”.
Construction cores under the building with organically shaped wooden niches are covered with interactive reflective surface, subtly mirroring nature and letting the light into the gardens.
Existing trees are left untouched. Our proposal follows vegetation area, alongside coastline. Green gardens under main building are a huge vegetation area, with flora species characteristic for wetlands. Areas around the building are coated by wetland plants and surfaces for pedestrian / circular traffic are made with natural, environment-friendly local materials.
National Logging Museum is designed to provide daylight reaching inside spaces by controlled roof screen-shading panels. The height of wooden facade is used as a natural blockage. Horizontal architectural form is planned with awareness of light pollution and prevents overheating of building.
National Logging Museum being parallel forms precisely fragmented with transitional area in between, give space for natural air conditioning and ventilation. The cores, which don’t need the required 7m height and have free space above, are technical zones. Water can be temporarily stored under the building giving the new quality for the landscape.
All of mentioned above make this architectural proposition realisable and easy to maintain afterwards. It will become sustainable building, with its bioclimatic architectural solutions, achieving LEED gold certification.
Based on ecotone definition National Logging Museum gives new meaning as a boundless space between architecture and natural reservoir’s heritage. Drawing from both environments and mixing them well together. Industry, culture, nature, knowledge and architecture in one statement.
