OFFICE INAINN has embarked on a project to transform a historic farm building into a restaurant and spa, paying tribute to the legacy of Nikoline “Nikka” Myren Grønnings—a beloved local figure renowned for her contributions to the community and her appearances on Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK). The project, located in Fjord Kommune, aims to integrate modern functionality into the existing structure while preserving its historical character.
Design Philosophy: Respecting History and Site
The design of Nikkaskjøkken is deeply rooted in an understanding of the site’s history and the significant cultural contributions of Nikka Grønnings. The approach involves a non-invasive insertion of new structures, ensuring that the additions blend harmoniously with the existing architecture. This careful integration respects the original aesthetic while introducing necessary modern amenities.
Project Overview: A Multi-Level Experience
Third Floor (Restaurant): The heart of the project lies on the third floor, where a modular restaurant will be installed, fully preserving the existing structure. The space will include a kitchen, dining area, buffet, and guest facilities, all designed to TEK17 standards. The remaining portion of the floor will retain its original appearance and be used seasonally. The addition of a wood-burning fireplace enhances the rustic atmosphere.
Preserving Heritage and Enhancing Tourism
This project is part of a broader initiative to rehabilitate the entire farm, carried out in phases by the owner. The transformation of the barn into Nikkaskjøkken not only preserves the legacy of Nikka Grønnings and her impact on local culinary culture but also enriches the region’s tourism offerings. By honoring the past while embracing the future, OFFICE INAINN continues to create spaces that resonate with both history and modernity, contributing positively to the community and its visitors.
